Introducing Artificial Intelligence, a Technology Often Overlooked in Digital Space

Artificial Intelligence

Jepara - When discussing digital technology, it’s impossible to ignore artificial intelligence, which many internet users in the digital space do not fully realize.

This AI introduction was one of the topics at a digital literacy webinar held for the Jepara community on Tuesday (22/6/2021). The national digital literacy movement is a program launched by President Joko Widodo to support faster digital transformation and build a more digitally capable society.

Speakers included Muhammad Bima Januri, Indah Wenerda, Joko Priyono, and Heru Prasetia, with key opinion leader Suci Patia and moderator Triwi Dyatmoko. Each speaker shared digital literacy information based on four pillars: digital culture, digital ethics, digital safety, and digital skill.

During the event, Muhammad Bima Januri explained how AI is actually close to everyday internet users.

Artificial intelligence, Bima Januri said, is the ability of a machine or computer system to imitate human behavior. An IDC Asia survey found AI use rose 14 percent in Southeast Asia in 2018, and by 2021 about 24.6 percent of Indonesian companies had adopted AI systems.

This shows AI adoption is becoming more comprehensive. “In Indonesia, AI is often used in chatbots that answer user questions,” Bima said.

From year to year, Bima said the number of Indonesian companies using chatbots has increased by 25 percent. AI is commonly used in banking, e-commerce, telecommunications, and healthcare.

“Indonesia’s National AI Strategy 2020 identified five areas using AI: health, bureaucratic reform, education and research, food security, and mobility,” he explained.

Applied AI products in Indonesia include chatbots, automated messaging services based on user behavior, virtual reality, and personalized products.

“Personalized products use AI to deliver the best answers from everyone searching the same phrase or keyword,” Bima added.

Mobile phone cameras also use AI in ways users rarely notice. “The camera reads light and adapts settings so photos look better,” he said.
